Disruptive Coloration
colored pencil and watercolor
2018

Disruptive coloration is a form of camouflage that works by breaking up the outlines of a bird with strongly contrasting patterns and colors, allowing it to avoid predation by blending into either its environment or the other members of its flock. For almost 40 years, birds—often in combination with plants and other creatures—have been the focus of my drawings. They have served as both design elements and metaphoric devices. In the Disruptive Coloration series of drawings, I return to what visually delighted me about birds to begin with: their myriad forms, patterns, and colors.
